STRINGS & HAMMERS

Places & Times is a collection of sonorous landmarks and magical moments; percussion ensemble works that are as compelling as they are mysterious.

PLACES & TIMES

This CD makes a fascinating collection. For its important new contributions to the percussion repertoire and the sheer expertise in performance, it seems destined to become a staple in the libraries of percussion aficionados at the very least. A number of the works here may also reach a much wider audience as well.

KID STUFF

Some music lately has taken an unabashed turn to tonal beauty. That is true of the music of Hilary Tann, as heard in chamber works on Musical Landscapes (Centaur 3357). On it we experience eight short to mid-length works written by Ms. Tann between 1984 and 2012. The works are for configurations of violin, cello and piano, alone and in various groupings.

I am captivated by the program and recommended it to you who seek new avenues in tonality today. It charms consistently without pandering in the slightest. - Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review

MUSICAL LANDSCAPES OF HILARY TANN

ORCHARD

Initially conceived as a commissioning consortium project in 2018, Kline’s Orchard collection encompasses a wide spectrum of contemporary styles and techniques across the 50 pieces.

The Orchard project has also served multiple purposes for pianists since its conception: to be an entrypoint for pianists unfamiliar with contemporary music and/or the commissioning process; a tool for piano teachers to introduce contemporary techniques and styles to pianists through the performance of shorter works; and to offer a flexible set of pieces that pianists can plug into their programming as they see fit.

To celebrate the centennial of Isang Yun’s birth in 2017, composers from far afield wrote solo pieces for pianist Eunmi Ko to perform as a tribute to him – eight musical worlds that come together in one: Unus Mundus.

UNUS MUNDUS: TRIBUES TO ISANG YUN

David Liptak’s piano music has always displayed this composer’s personality as one intimately tied to the physicality of the instrument. Previously, he combined his work as a composer with that as a pianist, most often presenting new composition. The sound and feel of the piano as a contrapuntal instrument underlies his work as a composer. The two compositions of this recording are performed by pianist Eunmi Ko, whose grace and imagination as a performer is a perfect match to the music.

CONSTELLATIONS

Her strengths are an abundance of technique, as well as a beautiful array of pianistic colors. For this release she has chosen an array of works, both old and new. Two of the works featured are receiving here their world premiere recordings- John Liberatores She rose, and let me in: Scottish Variations and Fugue, and Gilad Rabinovitchs star dazzling me, live and elate which was commissioned by Ko, herself.
